Here's the proof its possible: I had captured proper full DV (540 or 57x lines). Thing is, this software dumps its advert on captured stuff every 10sec or so. Camera FW port is dead. Tried on multiple computers. There is no way to switch from USB to FW, so there is no problem with misconfig of camcorder itself. Software wont drop any errors, since the cam is just not detected, as if its just not there. Sony Vegas, Virtual dub and some other software is picking it up, but there are 2 problems - Vegas is paid and VirtualDub wont capture sound from DV (sound comes from recording audio device).

Im sure the likes of cash converters would have a working miniDV one for not much. The risk of dropped frames, absent timecode, and AVI codec incompatibilities are not worth it IMO. I have an old JVC MiniDV which I use mainly just for capturing to PC and rewinding tapes. Now i'll definitely have to check if vegas works on USB, for not to look like a lying tool I'm pretty sure it was Vegas. Well, i remember old sony i had (DCR-TRV17e) that used usb (1.0-1.1) to dump photos off the memorystick. But now cameras come equipped with full 2.0 hi-speed support, so i suppose you can dump DV thru that.
#EDIT# Just remembered - Panny NV-GS37 has a way to set USB output to either DV out or a web-cam function. Mine is set to DV out and it works thru Scenalyzer. Will confirm on situation Vegas tonight. But now cameras come equipped with full 2.0 hi-speed support, so i suppose you can dump DV thru that. I understand why you want to do that, but I don't believe this is supported - at least not in any software I've come accross. The thing is: DV on the tape is different than stills (or even video clips) on a memory card or DVD.
On a memory card or DVD you have a file which you can just copy. With DV, you have a raw stream of data on the tape. The capture application needs to process this data and store it in a file format. The video capture applications use Firewire for that. The only 'capture' I've seen from DV cams over USB is to use a low quality web cam function. Been looking for damn disks. Probably lost during move.
I have chucked out bucketfull of 'drivers' cds since majority of them are more or less useless. Where did you get ENGLISH manual for GS37? Ive got it in all european languages but ENGLISH. Figured most of the stuff myself. Can you mail me one?
